Slaying Jack
Little is known about Slaying Jack except that his real name is Jack Slayer and that he is from one of the minor Liberty systems. He has serious facial and upper-torsal disfigurements that resulted from a virus attack some years ago. It seems that during the Great Migration to Sirius an age-old virus of the type then commonly known as a “Super Bug” had managed to get into one of the sleeper ships. This virus had been first identified in the 20th Century, eating away living flesh from its victims, with a 99% fatality rate. It was first detected in hospitals and is believed to have developed there in almost sterile environments. This is thought to have made the virus not only highly contageous (transferred by bodily fluid and by contact with open wounds and scratches), but also almost impossible to eradicate at the time. Eventually a cure was found which arrested the spread of the virus, but even modern technology still cannot repair damage caused by this monster to its voctims at the human molecular level. Slayer had been brought in to a hospital barely alive after a devastating space battle. Significant reconstructive surgery was needed on his face and upper body to heal his injuries. Sometime during this ordeal he contracted this deadly virus. No one knew it had been doing its work painlessly and undetected under the dressings and bandages for several days before they were changed, and then it was too late. By the time doctors diagnosed and stopped it, over 50% of his facial tissue had been destroyed. He made and still uses the codename “Slaying Jack” in macabre remembrance of the day when his dressings were removed to reveal the dreadful damage the virus had done. Slayer has since spent most of his time in space away from people as even today's advanced skin grafts and tissue transfers will not take to his skeletal structure. Doctors believe it may be due to microscopic residual remains of the original virus that has settled into his very bone tissues, but he will not sit as anyone's guinea-pig, even for the advancement of science. Completely in contrast to the aura given him by his horrible disfigurements, Jack lives by his own self-applied rules: Honesty, Bravery, Respect, Integrity, Honor and the simplest of all: “if I do not kick your dog, then you sure as heck better not kick mine”. He keeps true to his morals even when it concerns those he hunts down, making him a constant and reliable asset for the RRJDS. He is known as a “straight shooter” not only for his ways of handling every day events, but for his deadly marksmanship too, a straight-to-the-point man in conversation, in business, and in pleasure. Not many live to tell of his accuracy once they are in his cross hairs unless he decides they will. His work for the Guild is classified. Some say he is a professional assassin, others that he is a Buccaneer looking after his own interests. Does it really matter? He will usually accept any job as long as it does not violate his personal morals or the Laws of the RRJDS. He sets his own fees for payment and is known to also take on jobs for the opportunity of private duels when it pleases him to do so. He has his own opinion of all things and usually his opinion is the right opinion - at least, as far as he is concerned! |
